R&D demonstrators: how to take technology from prototype to market
Many companies develop technically promising solutions but struggle with the next step: demonstrating them under near-real conditions, reducing risk and convincing customers, partners or investors. Demonstrator projects can have their greatest impact precisely in this gap between development and market.
Call MPr-2026-7 — SIID Business R&D, Individual and Collaborative Demonstrators is open, as at 19 August 2026, with applications scheduled until 29 December 2026.
What is a demonstrator?
A demonstrator is not merely a larger prototype or a disguised commercial production line. It validates a technology, product, process or system at a scale and in an environment that are sufficiently representative to prove performance.
The central question is: which technological or operational uncertainty must still be resolved before market entry? The application should identify that uncertainty, explain how it will be tested and establish objective success indicators.
Individual or collaborative project?
An individual operation may fit when the company has the skills, assets and validation capacity in-house. Collaboration becomes relevant when the challenge requires complementary knowledge from other companies or research organisations.
A partnership should not exist simply to meet a formality. Each entity needs a clear role, its own deliverables and an indispensable contribution. Consortium governance, ownership of results and future exploitation should be agreed before submission.
Connect the technical plan to the business plan
A strong demonstrator combines two coherent narratives. The technical narrative covers the starting point, challenges, experimental activities, tests, metrics and results. The economic narrative covers the customer problem, opportunity, advantages over alternatives and route to market.
A technically interesting project without a credible use case will struggle to demonstrate impact. An attractive commercial opportunity based only on routine engineering will lack R&D content.
Build a traceable budget
Staff, equipment, materials, testing and external services should be linked to specific tasks. The budget must show who does what, for how long and with which expected result.
R&D and demonstration activities must also be separated from normal production, sales or operating expenses. This distinction supports assessment and subsequent financial delivery.
Five questions before proceeding
- Is there a genuine, clearly described technological uncertainty?
- Does the demonstration environment represent future use?
- Can the indicators prove whether the solution works?
- Do the team and partners have delivery capacity?
- Is there a credible route from demonstration to market?
The December deadline allows for deeper preparation, but collaborative projects need time to align partners, responsibilities and intellectual property. Preparation should start now, not in the final weeks.
